Gordon Higginson 1920-1992 - Probably one of the finest exponents of Mediumship Spiritualism has ever seen.
Gordon's Mother Fanny Higginson was also a fine medium of her day. Gordon first sat in development group at the tender age of Three! By the time he was Ten years old he was giving Spirit messages to his fellow sitters in the group. On his Twelfth birthday his Mother gave him a very unusual present, he was allowed to take a service on his own at Longton Spiritualist Church, such was his sensitivity to the Spirit World. Gordon then went regularly to services with his Mother and they would share the platform together, after this Gordon was given regular bookings as a Medium in his own right and subsequently went on in his long career to serve Spiritualist meeting places all over the UK and abroad.
Gordon left school at 14, but carried on his education at Wolverhampton Technical College studying advertising, window dressing and publicity, he then went on to work for a shoe company, where he was a buyer, he eventually became a Director for that company.
The Second World War came along and Gordon was conscripted and was a Officer. Every Soldier then had to wear an Identity Disk bearing their rank, name, number and religion, the hierarchy refused to put Spiritualist on his Disk, they told Gordon he could have Methodist, Baptist or even Wesleyan, he refused, they told Gordon the word Spiritualist was too long for the Disk, and suggested he use the word Spiritism instead, Gordon remained persistent and he eventually was allowed the word Spiritualism.
The gallant Men that served under Gordon all knew he was a Medium, they somehow felt protected, and safe with him in command. Gordon often recounted Psychic experiences during Wartime conflicts. Gordon and his Men were based in Italy, the Company advanced across a river ver a virtually unusable bridge, they came under attack by German Troops and were unable to retreat, the bridge had now collapsed and the river was very fast flowing, they took shelter in a Farmhouse, soon the Company were surrounded by the enemy, if they were caught now they would be shot dead.
Gordon was asked by another Officer if he could lead his Men to a safe position?...A small Spirit Guide named Cuckoo who was a Girl, Gordon had known her from his early years in Development Groups told him to follow a ball that she had, and they would be led to safety, Gordon did as she asked and they were indeed led to safety.
Once the War had finished in 1945, Gordon was now able to return to his Vocation in life, to be a Spiritualist Medium and to prove Life Eternal. Gordon worked alongside many famous Mediums of the day, Harold Vigours, Nan Mackenzie, and later with Albert Best, Coral Polge etc, to name just a few.
He worked a the Albert Hall in London to capacity Audiences. Gordon was also very well known for his untiring work as a Physical Medium, where the Spirit Operators use Ectoplasm via the Medium to recreate a Physical likeness of how they appeared in a earthly body. He also entered Trance states to allow Spirit Guides to give Spirit Teachings from the Greater World.
Gordon had been a Member of the Spiritualist National Union from the age of 18. It was in 1970 that he was first elected President of the Union, and then he was elected every year up to his passing in 1992. He was also Principle of The Arthur Findlay College ( bequethed by Arthur Findlay to the Union in 1964) at Stansted Mountfitchet, affectioniatly known as " Spook Hall ".
He as also President of his own Church in Longton. Gordon was very proud to celebrate the SNU Centenary celebrations in 1991 at the Wembley Conference Centre in London. After this sadly Gordon had spells of bad health, he even had a stroke, but he carried on working for the Spirit World he so loved, and was happy and glad to represent.
I felt privileged to see Gordon work many times at the Arthur Findlay College, Stansted Hall, I even met him when I attended the open week in 1991 there. There is a Gordon Higginson website and facebook page, keeping his memory and teachings alive, you can hear his talks and lectures, they are still inspiring to listen to. Gordon is sorely missed by the World, he gave his life to Spiritualism and we are eternally grateful to him for his love and dedication to the Spiritualist Movement, for his devotion and hard work to the World he was a true Ambassador for. Jean Bassett, another dedicated Medium wrote Gordons Biography entitled " On The Side Of Angels ".
