Hi Jenny: The topaz is named after a Greek word which means “to seek” and it has always been considered very valuable. According to the historian Pliny, there was a legendary island named Topazos in the Red Sea where this gem was mined. The stone is translucent and available in all colours. In ancient times, the Imperial Yellow Topaz was most expensive but now the blue varieties are very common. There is a Swiss blue, a sky blue and a London blue (a darker blue said to be the colour of the London sky). The Topaz has recently been technologically treated to enhance its colour, and is now available in extraordinary hues, such as mystic, peacock, flamingo, rainbow and silver. Mexico, USA, Pakistan, Japan, Germany, Italy, Sweden and Afghanistan have mines of topaz. It is the anniversary stone for 23rd year for birthdays or wedding anniversaries and should be worn in November, especially if orange in colour, when it is especially auspicious. It is said to foster the qualities of good leadership. The Mystic variety, though interesting in its rainbow shades, is coated with a special treatment, so be careful how you clean it. The stone, though exceedingly hard, has a brittle quality and should be worn carefully as a ring or bracelet because the stone can easily chip but it can be worn as a pendant or earrings, as these get less wear.
