Families are almost always, previously combined arrangements that happened in the invisible world among the different characters of a drama or an ancient
tragedy, to set their differences through the cosmic clock of love to our
neighbors, so that one day everyone may be happy. They are born next to us, or we are born together with our adversaries, victims or disaffection of long-gone eras, whom we have seriously hurt or have created difficulties and suffering to ourselves, perfectly avoidable, if all of us had acted in righteousness.
Surely, according to our merits, wonderful people who we deeply love and respect will also be born, but this is almost an exception, and not the rule. Haven’t we learned from Jesus that we have first to reconcile with our adversaries? That we wouldn’t be liberated – from suffering – until we have paid off the last penny of our debts before the laws of love? That those who wrong are slaves of the error? Do you recall his brief and loving warning? The one that says: Go and sin no more, so that nothing worse comes to you. Well, this is it!
The family is the field of tests, where we meet friends and disaffections. The
first bring us the solace of their lovely affection in a nice and constructive
relationship. It is very easy to love them. The others, well, not really. They are
difficult people that unconsciously still hold grudges against us they are unable
to forget, or sorrows they are unable to overcome. It is much more difficult to
love them, transforming their negative attitude toward us in an affective
relationship, unarmed and genuine. Again, we remember the Christ, who knew, foreseen, and advised us about everything:
(...) Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. (Luke 6.27)
And later, at Luke 6.32:
If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them.
This philosophy, apparently so strange, have profound motivations. In relation
to those we love there are no problems to be solved. They are our friends
already; we just need to cultivate the relationship with care and respect. With
those we do not tune in is quite the opposite, we have unfinished business,
even if consciously we are unaware of it. Due to a hidden reason, we are
together to learn to fraternally love one another. And again we recall the Christ when he said words of the utmost importance:
Reconcile with your opponent while you are on the way with him.
This is an absolute truth. He or she was placed in our way precisely for this
purpose – reconciliation – for us to turn adversaries into friends. It is easier to
perform this task when we ignore the real causes of our differences.
Furthermore, the difficult work of reconciliation has even more merit when we
spontaneously make an effort to gain the trust and brotherly love of those who don’t love us, instead of doing that only because it is our obligation to offer the former enemy the reparation he or she deserves. Moreover, you will not be doing that to a strange or unknown person, but to your own child, your father or your mother, or a brother, in short, a family member.
