Brain Wave Synchronization Between Severely Autistic Person and Facilitator

I hypothesize that brain wave rhythm synchronization measured between energy healers and patients using (EEG) readings also occurs between the facilitator and the person diagnosed with severe autism. I suggest this syncing of brain waves is what allows the typist to balance himself during the facilitated communication process. Matching vibration and merging brain waves can provide support in many areas, where the severely autistic person demonstrates discomfort.

Facilitated Communication remains controversial. It continues to have more detractors than enthusiasts. This fascinating energetic relationship between the facilitator and the nonverbal person with autism is a mysterious, misunderstood connection that has many benefits beyond communication. As a seasoned facilitator and energy healer, I want to see this anomaly opening discussed, understood and used. FC is a complicated process with many interesting components that demand open dialogue and further investigation.

Facilitated Communication is a process where the facilitator provides a non-verbal person with autism hand or arm support as he types. Once given this support, the autistic person suddenly demonstrates never seen areas of competence. It is startling phenomenon that leaves parents spellbound. Most proponents agree the facilitator provides motor and emotional support and insist the information is coming solely from the typist. Detractors suggest information is coming from the facilitator as he inadvertently moves the typists hand to the appropriate letters. When the typist strikes the keys without physical assistance, many consider him an independent typist. Neither proponents nor detractors of the process seem to address the fact that the facilitator is still sitting next to the person typing, usually with intense focus on the keyboard. Why is this necessary? Some may suggest this is emotional support.

I hypothesize Facilitated Communication has an energetic component. I suggest that the typist syncs his brain wave rhythms with the facilitator. As he does, the typist appears to be more balanced, organized and grounded then before resonance was established. The relationship could be compared to coupled oscillators that begin moving in unison or two tuning forks in proximity, one influencing the other forming a single vibration. An (EEG) hook up between the facilitator and typist could prove if my hypothesize has merit.

I suggest that the dynamic link between the facilitator and the typist is similar to that which occurs between an energy healer and the patient. The healer exudes a high vibration; the patient raises his own vibrational frequency to match the healer and heals himself. In facilitation, I feel the typist and the facilitator are also matching vibrational frequency. But is this case I suspect it is the typist who is lowering his frequency to meet or blend with the facilitator's brain wave and bodily rhythms.

Therapeutic Touch, TT, is a form of energetic healing studied and used widely by nurses. According to Life Technology New, (2008) "... when the healer and patient are in the process of TT, their brain wave rhythms sync up, a resonance also of heart rate, synaptic rhythm, body rhythms, and breathing. When a "resonance" to build between two people, the ability to transfer thought and emotion by telepathy is also amplified."

This syncing of brain waves and bodily rhythms demonstrated in TT, explains the focus and behavior changes of a person engaged in FC. The telepathic resonance many facilitators report is a vital part of the process. Once the typist and the facilitator sync brain waves and bodily rhythms, The facilitator can systematically slow his brain waves and bodily rhythms, encouraging the typist to remain in sync. The facilitator's relaxed intent and focus encourage the typist to produce longer slower brain waves.

For example, I had lunch today with a friend with severe autism who was very excitable and disorganized. When we sat down at the table in the restaurant, she began to screech, and throw her arms around. I sat across from her, and I encouraged her to put her feet on top of mine. We formed a resonance. I did this by initially matching her excitement, and then lowering my energy by making my mind go blank and just feeling calming energy waves cascading down my spine. Within a few minutes, she was calm, balanced, and organized enough to eat. If she had not responded, I would have taken her for a walk. The purpose would be to get her back in sync with my brain waves and rhythm so she could relax. When asked about the process, she typed with facilitated support. "It helps me feel very grounded and safe, like head is more connected to my body."

The facilitator has to remain somewhat conscious in all circumstances, but more so when the typist hits the keys on his own, but is still requires a facilitator to sit next to him. The facilitator must stay focussed, present and aware as the typist needs more energetic focus than when giving physical assistance. When the facilitator does this, the typist brain waves slow down. Because of this synchronizing effect, the disorganized system of the typist becomes balanced. This energetic relationship and syncing of brain waves can support multiple areas of learning, not just dialogue. Motor planning activities and adaptive daily living skills can be more effectively learned when the facilitator and the unorganized system of the autistic person align. The autistic person feels safer, more balanced, grounded, and protected by his partner, than he does when energetically on his own. I suspect Annie Sullivan used similar techniques to resonate with Helen Keller. It explains their energetic and telepathic connection.

Cited from Life Technology News (2008) Dr. John Zimmermann, founder and president of the Bio-Electro-Magnetic Institute of Reno, Nevada has found that healers usually hooked up to the Schuman Resonance, 7.8-8 hz alpha rhythm. The right and left brain is balanced. The patient's brain waves also go into alpha and are phase-synchronized with the healer and his right and left brain balance. The healer links the client with the earth's magnetic field.

Just like the patient matches the healer, I suggest the typist matches the facilitator's brain wave and goes into alpha, which assists him in balancing his right and left brain. The facilitator grounds the typist into the into the magnetic field of the earth vibration, which in turns makes him more comfortable. This can be supplemented with nature walks, spending time at the beach, listening to ocean wave, music with nature sound, or recordings of Schuman Resonance. These grounding activities assist in producing longer and slower brain wave patterns. A person cannot stay present if he is not comfortable. For example, after lunch with my friend, we listened to some grounding music in the car and then took a walk on the beach. While there, she typed with facilitated support, "It is a beautiful day." I asked her what she meant as it had just stopped raining and was overcast. She continued, I feel happy because my body is in control or something to that effect.

Belief and aptitude differs amongst facilitators. Just as there are healers with varied aptitudes, facilitators' abilities and experiences also vary, as does the resonance that occurs through their individual couplings.
Cited from Life Technology News (2008) Researcher Maxwell Cade discovered using a computerized EEG power spectra analyzer, unique complex brain wave pattern found only in advanced healers that became prominent in the brain waves of patients during the healing process.

I speculate the advanced facilitator may be receiving these complex brain wave patterns from the typist once they have learned to remove limitations and truly listen. Complex wave patterns may result in spiritual and inter-dimensional communications. The facilitator's own perspective begins to expand exponentially. This method of aligning with complex wave patterns differs from using FC to slow down brain waves to increase bodily balance, Both are significant and can be practiced individually or simultaneously depending on the facilitator's interest, understanding and aptitude. Perhaps these complex brain waves could be identified by the above mentioned EEG power spectra analyzer and assist us in understanding of the frequently reported mystical aspects of the phenomena.

The typist is dependent on the facilitator's knowledge base and vocabulary. For example, Pair the typist with a good facilitator, who is also a mathematician, and the typist would be competent. If the typist is typing with a good facilitator with limited mathematical understanding, he would be unable to perform at the same level. Does the facilitator's lack of knowledge create interference? Does this interference affect the syncing of brain waves and prevents the typist from continuing? An EEG of both the facilitator and the typist could help us understand the effect of interference.

Hypnosis sessions like healing and facilitation require relationship. When a hypnotist works with a client; there is a tendency for the client to want to please the hypnotist. He gives over his subconscious self in the hope of getting a positive result. During FC, the typist hands over his subconscious mind hoping to become more balanced and organized. The facilitator should be aware that the typist like the hypnosis subject can be very suggestible. The same standards and ethics must apply. In order for this to happen, the facilitator needs to be aware of the possibility and treat sensitive information accordingly.

I have just touched on the energetics of FC. Rapid Prompting Method RPM and Supported Typing share this telepathic and energetic component. There is so much to dissect and explore on a deeper level. An (EEG) is a start. Until then, I recommend that facilitation is an important intervention. The facilitator should listen intently, focus on the task at hand, expect competence, let go of limiting beliefs, and watch the person he is serving become more balanced and happy. Do not worry about the source of communication. It varies and change for a multitude of reasons that desperately need open dialogue and study.

Hi Terry,
Fascinating! I sense I do something similar without being aware of it with people with autism. It seems to relax them. Early in my career, mirroring was an approach I used. Perhaps, it was by intentionally trying to mimic their rhythm and movement that helped me form a resonance that now appears to come naturally. I just saw a client I hadn't seen in about five years. Within minutes , we re-established our resonance and he began to type with FC support.

Interesting stuff that needs further study. If parents could be taught to establish this type of resonance that some people do naturally, it would be very helpful. Good luck in your work. I think your ability can be used in many areas of healing.

In the same vein, Richard Bandler, who put his name to NLP carried out and experiment with a comotised patient, sitting on a bed. He sat next to him for an hour or more, tuned in to his breathing, copied every slight movement, when he eventually jumped up, so did the client.
I have found that I do that when working with a client, I do not do it intentionally, I slow my breathing, so do they. I have been using Hypnosis for healing, both mind and body for many years now, I give talks and demonstrations on it. (If anyone is interested) :-) It is very powerful.
