Childs and Sherman: two researcher-mediums
Summing up her life’s work, as a journalist and as a medium, Gladys Childs writes:
"I am often asked where I believe the higher planes of existence are; how spirits are free to visit anywhere they like, and what the heaven world or worlds are really like.
I am told the next dimensions are in a different kind of space around us, just as real to us there as this world is here.
Spirits are free to visit anywhere they wish by thought, they learn to transport their spiritual bodies by concentrated thought [by conductivity as Betty White called it].
Here on earth, we mortals can flash back in thought to whatever part of the world we have visited or lived in, reliving and reviewing pleasant or unpleasant situations.
In this life, having the desire to visit another state, or town, or a foreign country, we do so first by preparing in thought for the same. Thinking, then planning and then doing.
You don’t go anywhere, not even into the next room, before first thinking to do so.
It is the same in the After Life. My understanding is that the spirits must learn to transport their spiritual bodies by the depth of their concentration and the desire of their minds. Remember, we first had to learn how to walk here, to get any place on our own.
I am impressed, time and again, that the spirit world is a replica of our world. The planes are similar to our earthly states, say in the United States, for instance. People, like attracting like, find themselves with others of similar interests and environments.
Each plane has a place of learning – arts, music, theatre, various professions and vocations, ad infinitum. One has the choice of what he or she wants to learn and do.
Of course, as in our world, there are those in the spirit world who are not ambitious or just wish to stay around in their earthly homes or business places, or gather with other spirits of evil in the spirit world, as was their way of living on earth. Unless and when they choose to change their thinking, to give up on the evil and switch to a more constructive state of consciousness, they will remain in a low plane of existence. [Passing through the transition of bodily death doesn’t change a person’s character, any more than walking into another room, or visiting another country does so].
I believe we create here on earth our own heaven and hell by our thinking. Think miserable and you are miserable. Think happy and you are happy. If we give our fellow man the power to hurt us, he can make us miserable. Our fellow man also has the power to make us happy, if we let him. [People who fear a certain illness usually get it. They attract disaster to themselves by negative thinking, and reciting Murphy’s law! Bad things happen to good people because of hidden thoughts and influences – past life influences can also enter into the equation, although some people do not believe in any form of reincarnation. Nevertheless, ancestral influences may still be there, and so they seem to take effect for no apparent reason! The spirits, and some clairvoyants, and psychiatrists, know all about this, and will try to help clear and release the negative entities and conditions – I have mentioned Seiyu Kiriyama’s and Wanda Pratnicka’s work in
earlier articles about this problem].
Perhaps my problem was that I gave my American [second] husband and his children the power to hurt me. It was so difficult at the time not to be hurt, because I did care for him.
I hate friction. I usually bend over backward not to hurt anyone. When [Ted] my South African [first] husband first came to me in the spirit, it was in the evening and I was kneeling by my bed, saying my prayers, when I heard a swishing sound come swiftly through my bedroom window and semi-circle the room. I sensed the presence of three spirits.
Then a spirit voice came from an invisible entity standing in the centre of the room, saying ‘Gladys, I am here.’ I knew it was my South African husband. He had been transported by the other spirits, but I did not know who they were. Ted has come to me by himself, over the years, since that time.
I myself am trying to learn all I can about the After Life because I cannot escape it as it grows closer. I will always be indebted to my beloved mother’s knowledge and the early training and insight she gave me of spiritual things, which have seemed so normal to me in my advancing years. If there is anything to reincarnation, I’d like to say now that I have no desire to come back to another earth life, as this one has been filled with too many heartaches and frustrations for me.
I know there is such a thing as possession and many people get mixed up with the wrong kind of spirit influences. One has to be very careful experimenting with psychic forces. It is sometimes very difficult for people to get rid of evil spirits, once they become attached. I know there is a God Power within which can guide and protect you, once you keep attuned to it by right thinking. I am sure that the reason I have been aware of spirit visitations all my life is because I grew up in that type of environment and it seemed so natural to me.
I feel I must repeat that I am not clairvoyant, only clairaudient. I cannot see the person, but they can see me. It is a mind-to-mind communication, knowing the one I am speaking to is right there in front of me as I knew them in life. I wish I could see them. My mother and my aunt Laura were clairvoyant and could see the spirits of the ones who have crossed over.
I recall one evening when I was 17 years old, sitting with my mother in the music room of one of our haunted houses in South Africa. My two younger sisters, Maude and Ethel, had gone to bed. Mother was smiling at an unseen person standing in the doorway.
I asked her what she was seeing, and she replied: ‘A woman standing in the door entrance.’ Mother said she was wearing a pink dress and had the bluest eyes and sweetest smile.
At the time, it kind of scared me, as I could not see what she was seeing. People are inclined to ridicule what they can’t understand. Death is awesome if you think it is the end. So many people today live at such a fast pace, thinking their physical lives will go on forever, never giving thought to what lies beyond, until too late.
I am often asked, ‘When a person dies, how does he know where he is, where to go or what to do?’ My understanding is that we are met by relatives, friends or others known as ‘Greeters’ (spirits familiar with the spirit world) who help the newcomers to adjust to the spirit world and the traumatic change from the physical, teaching them how to transport their spiritual bodies and accept the transition.
Let me state again that I don’t do anything in preparation for a spirit visitation. No preparation at all. The spirits of loved ones come to me at their convenience. I never know when they are coming. The timing is theirs. I may be watching TV, reading the paper, or working on my news copy. I might be in church, or riding in a friend’s car. I have had a couple of spirits come to me while en route somewhere, walking or riding. I can be in a supermarket, or just anywhere. I never know. They come to me, I repeat, in THEIR time. That is, unless I am at a funeral where I often get a communication as the spirit is still very close to its earthly life, and if the person has adjusted to the transition, since the time of death and the funeral service."
Harold Sherman’s Evaluation of Gladys Childs’ Spirit Communications:
"Our Survival Research has revealed that an increasing number of men and women have had the psychic capacity to receive spirit messages, at times, from departed friends and loved ones. Many have been reluctant to report these psychic experiences which they have considered too personal, often almost too sacred, to risk the ridicule of sceptics or, even worse, those who would doubt their sanity.
Actually, we are getting evidence that the possibility of spirit communication is much more prevalent than has generally been supposed, and that thoughts between worlds can be exchanged by those, like Gladys Childs, who have come from home environments where members of the family have recognised and encouraged such psychic manifestations. [At the present time (2010) many autobiographies written by mediums have given similar accounts, and compilations such as “Hello From Heaven” by Guggenheim and Guggenheim continue with the work started by Alister Hardy and Frances Banks in researching all kinds of communication with the other side. Television programmes like A & E’s “Psychic Kids” show that youngsters with psychic ability are encouraged to train and have their second sight accepted both by themselves and their parents and by society.]
I am sure that you who have read these carefully organised reports which Gladys has methodically recorded are convinced that she was not activated by her imagination or wishful thinking in documenting this material. She was motivated only by the desire to compile evidence for the further assurance to herself and others of survival.
It has long been my contention that evidence for life after death could not be established in the laboratories of scientific investigators with their present methods of research. Dr. J.B Rhine, I was told, came to this conclusion years ago, and decided that he would devote his energies and research to other demonstrable phases of the paranormal. He died, as a consequence, without having achieved his original objective – the procuring of acceptable evidence that man survives death. This remained, to Dr. Rhine, with all his acknowledged contribution to the science of Parapsychology, an open question. [It need not have been, since he declined to attend a demonstration of physical mediumship and materialisation, not believing it possible, but which might have changed his mind].
As you consider the evidence contained in this book [and thousands like it] add it all up and observe how the same manifestations are occurring in the lives of many different, sensitised people, who are reporting the same type of messages and the same type of experiences.
If a dozen people, for example, should visit California, never having seen it before, and came back with significantly similar reports of the landscape and activities of the people there – shouldn’t you accept their reports as valid – and expect to encounter the same or similar experiences, yourself, when your turn would come to go to California?
The why not take the words of Gladys Childs [and other mediums and researchers like her], sifting out the reports of some as flights of fancy and imagination, but crediting others who have the solid ring of truth?
You can learn to tell the difference. Your own psychic experiences, if you have had them, will enable you to distinguish the true from the false." Harold Sherman.
